Run Around Coils

Run Around Coils

ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEAT RECOVERY SAVES MONEY

Exhaust air vented from a building contains heat energy - energy that's going to waste. You can reduce your heating costs by capturing that heat and recycling it.

That's what matched pairs of run-around coils do. One coil extracts the heat from exhaust air, the other transfers it to a cooler stream of incoming air. And a pump pack keeps the system circulating. It's as simple as that.

Any stream of warm exhaust air is a source of recoverable energy - and there's no limit on the distance between inlet and outlet air ducts. Run-around coils cut heating bills wherever they're installed - in factories, offices, hospitals, shopping malls, and other public buildings. They are particularly cost-effective in settings that generate high temperatures such as kitchens, laundries, and paint spray booths.

A self-contained heat recovery system

A run-around coil heat recovery system is essentially self-contained. It consists of a matched pair of coil heat exchangers. The two coils are piped together in a continuous loop through which the heat-exchange medium (water or a water/anti-freeze mix) flows. A pump pack ensures that the medium keeps flowing in a single direction at a constant rate.

Because the unit is sealed, it can transfer heat energy from contaminated exhaust air to incoming fresh air without degrading the quality of the incoming air.

The effectiveness (or efficiency - the two words are interchangeable in this context) of a heat recovery system is defined as the amount of heat that is actually recovered as a percentage of the heat that is theoretically recoverable. Where the exhaust and supply flow-rates are identical, the system could theoretically raise the temperature of the incoming air to that of the outgoing stream. When the flow-rates are not identical, the theoretical maximum refers to the condition in which the temperature of the slower air flow reaches that of the higher. Reductions from the theoretical maxima result from heat losses elsewhere and energy consumed by the pumping unit
